It's 9:45 PM. You just got off the water in Guiones, or you finally checked into your hotel after a delayed shuttle from Liberia, or the dinner plans you had imploded. Your kitchen at home is a disaster. You need food, hot food, in the next thirty minutes.
Welcome to Sámara and Nosara at night. Most kitchens close at 9 PM. Some close earlier on Mondays and Tuesdays. The rule we live by: if you don't have a plan by 9, you don't have many options. This guide is the plan.
The 9 PM rule
Coastal Guanacaste runs on early hours. Most local kitchens fire up around 11 AM, peak between 6 and 8 PM, and start cleaning down at 8:30. By 9 PM the door is locked. By 9:30 the staff is gone. This isn't a North American food economy with 24-hour diners and Denny's.
What you have instead is a small handful of places that consciously choose to stay open later because there's real demand from surfers, late shifts, hotel late-arrivals, and the occasional tourist who lost track of time. Below are the ones we'd send our own friends to.
In Sámara · open after 9 PM
Bad Mickey Burger · 10 PM close
This is us. We open until 10 PM every night, no exceptions. If you walk up at 9:55 and we're still open, you can still order, the grill is still on. We're in central Sámara and we deliver to most of the town. Call 2101-2250 or WhatsApp 15-20 minutes ahead and the order is ready when you arrive. Menu here.
Pizza Casa de la Tortuga · 11 PM close
The latest-closing kitchen in Sámara, and one of the few spots that's genuinely open until 11. Wood-fired pizza, decent salads, beer. They get busy on Friday and Saturday nights — call ahead if you're a group. ₡6,000-9,000 for a pie that feeds two.
Soda La Esquina · 10 PM close (most nights)
A soda with the somewhat unusual schedule of staying open till 10 most nights, occasionally 11 on weekends. Standard tica fare — casados, hamburguesas, gallo pinto, batidos. Cheap (₡3,500-5,000 for a full plate). The risk: they sometimes close earlier if it's slow, so it's smart to call first.
In Nosara · open after 9 PM
Bad Mickey Burger Nosara · 10 PM close
Same drill as Sámara — open until 10 PM, every night, no exceptions. Located in Playa Guiones, a short walk from the surf break. Most-ordered after-dark meals are the BM Burger and the Hot Chicken. Call 2234-8574 or WhatsApp for express service.
Olga's · 10 PM close
Beachfront seafood spot in Guiones. Stays open later than most because they catch the post-sunset crowd from the beach. Whole grilled fish, ceviche, casados, cold beer. Not the cheapest (₡8,000-15,000 per person) but the location is hard to beat for a late dinner.
La Luna · 10 PM close (closed Mondays)
On the road into Pelada. Bigger menu — pasta, pizza, fish, salads. They stop seating at 9:30 but won't kick you out if you're already there. Closed Mondays, which catches a lot of new arrivals off-guard. Call to confirm hours during low season.
Delivery options
Both towns are delivery-friendly even at night, but you have to call the restaurant directly. There's no Uber Eats or Rappi here. Most delivery cuts off between 9:30 and 10 — meaning if you call at 9:45 from a hotel that's 15 minutes away, the kitchen may have already started closing down. Call earlier than you think you need to.
For a guaranteed delivery slot in Sámara, call us by 9:30 and we'll have it at your hotel or villa by 10. Same for Nosara — order by 9:30 from Bad Mickey Nosara, food arrives by 10. After that we're cleaning down for the night.
What about really late · after 10 PM?
Honestly: not much. A few bars in both towns serve simple food (chips, nachos, a quesadilla) until they close, but you're not getting a real meal. The convenience stores (the Súpers and Pali) close around 9 PM and don't have hot food anyway.
Your best bet for after 10 PM: have something in your fridge from earlier in the day, or accept that you're going to have a snack and a "real" breakfast in the morning. Sámara opens early — most cafés are firing up by 7 AM, and the breakfast scene here is genuinely excellent.
The honest take
You came to a small Costa Rican coastal town. Part of the deal is that the food economy runs on early hours, the way the surf does. Embracing it — eating dinner at 7, calling it a night by 10 — is part of why this place is good for vacation. Trying to fight it gets frustrating fast.
That said: when you do get caught out, we're open till 10. Both locations. Every night. Servicio express. Have a look at the menu, then call ahead. We'll have it ready.

Bienvenido a Sámara y Nosara de noche. La mayoría de las cocinas cierran a las 9 PM. Algunas cierran antes los lunes y martes. La regla con la que vivimos: si no tenés un plan a las 9, no tenés muchas opciones. Esta guía es el plan.
La regla de las 9 PM
Guanacaste costera funciona en horario madrugador. La mayoría de las cocinas locales prenden la cocina alrededor de las 11 AM, hacen pico entre las 6 y 8 PM, y empiezan a limpiar a las 8:30. Para las 9 PM la puerta está cerrada. Para las 9:30 el personal se fue. Esto no es una economía gastronómica norteamericana con diners 24 horas y Denny's.
Lo que tenés en cambio es un pequeño puñado de lugares que conscientemente eligen abrir hasta más tarde porque hay demanda real de surfistas, gente del segundo turno, llegadas tardías a hoteles, y el turista ocasional que perdió noción del tiempo. Abajo están los lugares a los que mandaríamos a nuestros propios amigos.

Esto somos nosotros. Abrimos hasta las 10 PM todas las noches, sin excepciones. Si llegás caminando a las 9:55 y seguimos abiertos, podés pedir, la plancha sigue prendida. La cocina que cierra más tarde en Sámara, y uno de los pocos lugares que genuinamente abre hasta las 11. Pizza al horno de leña, ensaladas decentes, cerveza. Se llenan los viernes y sábados — llamá si sos grupo. ₡6,000-9,000 por una pizza que alimenta a dos.
Soda La Esquina · cierra a las 10 PM (la mayoría de las noches)
Una soda con el horario un poquito inusual de quedarse abierta hasta las 10 la mayoría de noches, ocasionalmente 11 los fines de semana. Comida tica estándar — casados, hamburguesas, gallo pinto, batidos. Barato (₡3,500-5,000 por un plato completo). El riesgo: a veces cierran antes si está flojo, así que es inteligente llamar primero.

Mismo cuento que Sámara — abierto hasta las 10 PM, todas las noches, sin excepciones. Ubicado en Playa Guiones, a pasos del break de surf. Las comidas más pedidas después del atardecer son la BM Burger y la Hot Chicken. Llamá al 2234-8574 o WhatsApp para servicio express.

Lugar de mariscos frente al mar en Guiones. Se queda abierto más tarde que la mayoría porque agarra el público post-atardecer de la playa. Pescado entero a la parrilla, ceviche, casados, cerveza fría. No es el más barato (₡8,000-15,000 por persona) pero la ubicación es difícil de superar para una cena tardía.
La Luna · cierra a las 10 PM (cerrado lunes)
En el camino a Pelada. Menú más grande — pasta, pizza, pescado, ensaladas. Dejan de sentar a las 9:30 pero no te echan si ya estás ahí. Cerrado los lunes, lo que toma de sorpresa a muchos recién llegados. Llamá para confirmar horarios en temporada baja.
Opciones de delivery
Ambos pueblos tienen delivery aún de noche, pero tenés que llamar al restaurante directo. No hay Uber Eats ni Rappi acá. La mayoría de los deliveries cortan entre las 9:30 y las 10 — lo que significa que si llamás a las 9:45 desde un hotel a 15 minutos de distancia, la cocina puede haber empezado a cerrar. Llamá antes de lo que pensás que necesitás.

¿Y qué tal de verdad tarde · después de las 10 PM?
Honestamente: no mucho. Algunos bares en ambos pueblos sirven comida simple (chips, nachos, una quesadilla) hasta que cierran, pero no vas a comer una comida real. Los súpers (los Súper y Pali) cierran alrededor de las 9 PM y de todos modos no tienen comida caliente.
Tu mejor apuesta después de las 10 PM: tener algo en la nevera de antes en el día, o aceptar que vas a picar algo y hacer un desayuno "de verdad" en la mañana. Sámara abre temprano — la mayoría de los cafés prenden a las 7 AM, y la escena de desayuno acá es genuinamente excelente.
La opinión honesta
Viniste a un pueblo costero costarricense pequeño. Parte del trato es que la economía gastronómica funciona con horarios tempranos, igual que el surf. Aceptarlo — comer cena a las 7, llamarlo noche para las 10 — es parte de por qué este lugar es bueno para vacacionar. Tratar de pelearlo se vuelve frustrante rápido.
Dicho eso: cuando te agarra la noche, abrimos hasta las 10. Ambas ubicaciones. Todas las noches. Servicio express. Mirá el menú, después llamá. Lo tenemos listo.
